As a kid he was made fun of for it. During the summer between his fifth and sixth year, however, he decided to change that and went back to school very changed. Most people actually didn't recognize him at first. Gilchrist had worked hard to lose all the weight that he did. He came back with his same dark hair and blue eyes, which is honestly how most people were able to recognize him. He stands a lot taller now though, partly because he had also hit his growth spurt at that time. He sometimes will draw into himself and slouch and seem very nervous because at times he does still see himself as the boy he was before that everyone called Chunky Dunk. Now, he tries to show himself as the man he wants to be, holding himself with pride (most days) and perfectly willing to get dirty. and then a little about yourself likes: girls, books, candles, flying, talking dislikes: bullies, frogs, squids, cars (they make him nauseous), people making him sing strengths: DADA, arithmancy, wandlore, loyal, friendly weaknesses: still self-conscious about his looks, not always self-assured, transfiguration, people in need, prefers to listen rather than speak thus appearing slow to some boggart: tight enclosed spaces (claustrophobia for the fail) >.> erised: to take over his grandfather's shop overall personality: Gilchrist is a nice guy. Actually, some people would probably say that he is too nice. When a lot of people find out that he likes things like candles and books, they start to question what kind of person he is. In all honesty, candles is something he shared with his grandmother before she passed and books were something that he shares with his mother which is probably the only reason he ever puts up with cars (so he can get more books with his muggleborn mother). He has always tried to be very friendly. Sometimes he comes off as very uncertain and it is because, on some levels, he still is. Having been teased for much of his childhood because of his weight, he has been working hard to get over these uncertainties but they do still creep up sometimes. He can't always control those feelings. That doesn't mean that he doesn't try though. He is persistent if nothing else. Because he was teased when he was younger, Gilchrist grew up very reserved. This is something that has come to be in him even today. He has a tendency to listen and make his assessments silently rather than speak up. He likes to take his time before he speaks. Because of this, many people tend to think, both unkindly and unfairly, that Gilchrist is a little slow. Both Gershom and Garrick were very upset by Grozdana's death though Garrick secretly hoped that his grandson might take more after him and come back to the family business unlike Gershom who had decided to join the ministry first as an auror and more recently as a member of the Wizengamot. Suki, Gershom's wife, worked for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Though both parents were very loving, work kept them gone long hours leaving Gilchrist in the care of his grandfather and grandmother. Gilchrist's grandmother, Linda, was a candle maker. She would keep Gilchrist with her sometimes while she tested the candles or decorated them, but never while she actually worked with the hot wax, not wanting to see her grandson hurt. When he wasn't with Linda, he was with Garrick learning about wands and wand making. The boy took in both crafts eagerly, loving the time that he spent with his grandparents almost as much as the rare moments he had with both his mother and father. When he wasn't with his family, he was going to school where he was teased for his weight. It was something that he had never noticed before he started attending school. He received his Hogwarts's letter shortly after his eleventh birthday. His family was thrilled, but unsurprised. Gilchrist had hoped that the teasing would stop now that he was going to his proper school. Unfortunately, it didn't. He was sorted into Hufflepuff. The combination of his house and his weight tended to make him an easy target, but he tried hard to enjoy himself, making friends mostly with people in his house and a few others. He did very well in classes like Defense Against the Dark Arts which confused other people since they never saw him as an aggressive person. And he wasn't. It was simply a class that he was good at. When he was allowed to start taking the extracurricular classes, Gilchrist moved into Arithmancy and Ancient Runes on the advice of his grandfather. During his fifth year, his grandmother died. It was something that all of the Ollivander family took very hard. It happened during Christmas break and Gilchrist had the misfortune of being there when she collapsed and then died. Since then, he has been able to see the thestrals that inhabit the grounds. He sometimes watches them when he wants to think about and remember his grandmother. When he returned home after his fifth year, he decided that he wanted to change himself. He knew that his grandmother would want him to be better than someone who wallowed in misery. It was for her that he worked to lose weight and carry himself better. It was for her that he worked to hold himself as an Ollivander should. Now that he is in his final year at Hogwarts, Gilchrist has made the decision that he wants to follow in his grandfather's footsteps rather than his father and mother.
